Ensign Hannah was a member of Fighter Squadron 17, piloting an F6F Hellcat from the Carrier Hornet, listed as missing in action following an air raid over Kure, Japan, on March 19, 1945, and officially declared dead on March 20, 1946. His plane was intercepted by a squadron of enemy aircraft over the Inland Sea (along the Japanese mainland) and shot down in flames. Commissioned in May, 1944, at Pensacola, Florida, the flyer had been overseas since November, 1944. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
