Lt. Staeheli served with Company K, 7th Infantry, Third Division. He served 2 years with the Illinois National Guard, then was admitted to the Second Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and assigned to the 17th Company. He then sailed overseas on December 14, 1917, and arrived in France where he was assigned further study and training at A.E.F. schools, Langres, and later sent to British school. He was then assigned to the 7th Infantry where he was killed while assisting a wounded German in the vicinity of Hill 272, north of Verdun. Lt. Steaheli was instantly killed by machine gun fire. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery.
