Father Flaherty was a Catholic Priest serving as an Army chaplain. He was from the religious order, Clerics of St. Viator, and assigned to Mobile Headquarters, Third Army. He died at Camp Polk, Louisiana, from injuries received when diving into a stream on maneuvers. He broke his back. Father Flaherty is buried at Maternity Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, Bourbonnais, Illinois.
