Lt. Rathe was leading a small unit of Marines to an ambush site on the Ca De River in the Da Nang area of South Vietnam. He was at the controls of an outboard motor boat when it took on water and sank. Lt. Rathe was seen swimming back to help a comrade in trouble but both were drowned.
