Lt. Babbitt died in a plane crash at Drew Field, Tampa, Florida. He enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in Chicago, Illinois, on November 3, 1941. He earned the American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Lt. Bars, Pilot Wings, and WWII Victory Medal. He is buried at Fairmont Cemetery, Willow Springs, Illinois.
