Second Lieutenant Darnall served with the 482nd Bomber Squadron, 505th Bomber Group, Very Heavy. He was a radar navigator and third pilot on a B-29. He was killed on his 23rd mission when his plane crashed at takeoff a mile off Tinian. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and Purple Heart.
