Robert Edward Buckbee

Lt. Buckbee enlisted at Portland, Oregon. In March, 1942, he was commissioned in the Naval Reserve and served on convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He died in England of pneumonia. Lt. Buckbee was awarded the Order of Red Star by the Russian government. The award was made for “outstanding military activities” in transporting war goods to Russia’s northern ports on the famed “Murmansk Run.” He was also commended by the Chief of Naval Personnel on June 24, 1943, for gallantry in service performed when a ship on which he was serving as armed guard officer was sunk. Lt. Buckbee is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville, Illinois, Block 13.
