Lt. Cartier was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 9th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter-Bomber Wing. On January 21, 1952, his aircraft crashed on takeoff from Taegu Airfield (K-2) going to Seoul. He was a veteran pilot of 65 jet missions in Korea. During World War II he flew 26 missions in Europe as a tailgunner. Lt. Cartier was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
