Captain Bonhard served with the 100th Squadron, 441st Troop Carrier Group. He was killed when a cargo plane he was piloting was shot down by the Germans near Paris, France. He is buried at Plot A Row 14 Grave 43 at Normandy American Cemetery, St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France. He was awarded the Air Medal.
