Lt. Haake enlisted at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, on January 26, 1942. He later trained at Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas; assigned to the Ferry Command at Dallas Texas; then transferred to the Air Transport Command. He was sent to India and flew cargo ships “over the hump” to China. At his own request, he was trasnferred to a B-25 and the Search and Rescue Squadron. Lt. Haake was killed in India. He was reburied at Bethania Cemetery, Justice (Cook County), Illinois, on June 9, 1948.
