Lt. Col. Delaney served with the 406th Fighter Squadron, 371st Fighter Group. He was Commanding Officer of the 406th. He was a veteran pilot of 150 missions in Europe, and was killed in an accident in Germany in the crash of a light plane, a Stinson L-5 used for liaison, observation and sundry tasks. He went overseas in April, 1944. He was credited with three aerial victories during the war. Lt. Col. Delaney is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold, France, Plot E Row 13 Grave 14. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Air Medal.
