Sgt. Garst served with the 569th Bomber Squadron, 390th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was top turret gunner on a Flying Fortress, missing in action over Germany since December 24, 1944, and since declared dead on December 25, 1945. He had been overseas since October 27, 1944. Sgt. Garst trained at Kingman, Arizona, and Alexandria, Louisiana. Shortly before his death he had participated in a raid over Darmstadt, Germany. He was based in England. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Luxembourg American Cemetery, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
