Lieutenant Metz was co-pilot of a C-119, Flying Box Car, with the 815th Troop Carrier Squadron, 483rd Troop Carrier Wing. He was listed as Missing in Action on June 23, 1953, when his plane crashed about 15 miles NNE of Ashiya, located on the west coast of Kyushu Island while transporting paratroopers of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team to Korea. Second Lieutenant Metz was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
