Lt. Koehler served from August 13, 1968, until his death on March 11, 1969. He died in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam, in a helicopter crash. Lt. Koehler had received a 4 year engineering scholarship to the University of Illinois from Carlyle High School. He completed one year of college and enlisted in the Army. In 1969 a memorial scholarship was established in honor of Walter at Carlyle High School. Every year a senior boy who ranks high in scholastic honors and letters in two sports earns the scholarship and has his name added to a plaque.
