Wayne Wilmer Dahlstedt was first employed as an assistant professor in English at the University of Illinois in October 1941. The next year he was promoted to full professor. He was drafted and entered the Army in March, 1943, receiving his commission at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In January, 1945 he was sent overseas with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant as a replacement officer in the 157 Infantry of the 45th division of the 7th Army. He was killed in action March 31, 1945 in Alsace Lorraine, Germany and posthumuously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
