T/4 Hullihan joined the Illinois National Guard’s 33rd Tank Company in Maywood, IL and was then inducted into federal service in November, 1940. He went through training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and in January, 1941 he was reassigned to the Headquarters Company of the 192nd Tank Battalion. His Battalion was then sent to the Philippine Islands in 1941, two weeks before the Pearl Harbor attack. He fought the Japanese after they invaded the Philippines, but was taken Prisoner of War. He participated in the Bataan Death March and was interred as a POW at Camp O’Donnell. He was transferred to Cabanatuan POW Camp #1 but died there of illness. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart. T/4 Hullihan was buried at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois on October 19, 1948.
