When Shawn Afryl’s family couldn’t afford football cleats his freshman year of high school, his Niles West coach gave him a pair—Afryl wore them while earning a Division 1 scholarship to Illinois. After his unexpected death in 2014, Afryl’s mother formed the No. 56 Shawn Patrick Afryl Shoe Fund to provide cleats to athletes in need.
