The Big Picture: Darwin’s Playground

Brian Stauffer/UI Public Affairs) Darwin’s Playground is a tribute to the childlike creativity of biologists and the malleability of life forms through genetic engineering. “The blobs,” as artist Tony Tasset originally called them, are constructed from polyurethane and covered in fiberglass, and stand in front of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology on the University of Illinois campus. The colorful sculptures convey the spirit of IGB and promote its mission: to advance life sciences research and to stimulate bioeconomic development in Illinois.
