Radio Tech Anderson was lost in action in the Spring of 1944 near the Kurile Islands and later declared dead. He was a petty officer on the submarine USS Herring on which he served. It failed to return from an offensive patrol and the submarine apparently sank with all hands during battle. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Submarine Combat Insignia, a Citation in Absentia for his performance of duty in operations against the enemy, and Purple Heart.
