Lt. Austin was the first Psi Upsilon-Omicron Chapter WWII casualty when a plane he piloted crashed in mid-air at 5,000 feet over a residential section of Phoenix, Arizona. Austin was a student in the instruction school at Luke Field and was engaged in instrument flying. Another plane approached from beneath and was not observed by Austin until just before the collision. He is buried at Beverly Cemetery, Blue Island, Illinois.
