Mr. Berner was with the 8th Armored Division, Division Athletic Section, Armored Ground Forces. He organized and coached athletic events and activities for the American servicemen. At the time of his death, he was attached to a university in Paris, France teaching classes for servicemen who were to return to the US.

He was buried in a military cemetery at Ile-de France, France, but in 1948 his body was returned to the US and he was buried in Morris, Illinois.
