Major Carius was a dentist with the Medical Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was killed in action while fighting the enemy in North Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Major Carius was well known among GI’s for turning out “combat choppers” under fire. The dental surgeon and two other men of the 25th Infantry Division had converted a truck into a dental laboratory called “Halitosis” and followed soldiers right up to the front lines. Their slogan was “Never Miss a Bite” and they made hundreds of dentures for the men.
