Lt. Burnside served with the 709th Tank Battalion. He is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France, Plot A Row 18 Grave 35. He was awarded the Purple Heart. There is also a memorial to Lt. Burnside at Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois.
